Few plants are better adapted to growth in desert like conditions than the Alluaudia. The semi succulent, ovate leaves are reduced to about a quarter inch and grow subsessile and vertical in spirals around the spiny trunks. The trunk is silvery green and heavily spined. The spines are used for defense and to gather moisture from the frequent fogs.
