Elm Chinese Officials Hat Chair From Shanxi - 19thC Material - Kair Wood This very elegant Console tableThese antique Chinese chairs were known as officials hat chairs because the shape of the back was reminiscent of an officials hat. They were often made in pairs for a husband and wife. They are usually made from elm or red elm, but examples made in walnut is also found in North China. This particular chair was originally lacquered with a burgundy lacquer which has since mostly worn away. They were made in pairs and it is very rare to find larger sets
