Bowers High School began fielding a basketball team in 1913

Sometime in the 1920′s the team was renamed “The Gladiators” and the team colors changed to red and white

”  The first recorded basketball game played in Crawfordsville was in 1894 between the Crawfordsville YMCA and the Lafayette YMCA

and most practices were conducted on outdoor cinder courts

Since Wingate was also called Spartans, in 1931 a contest was held and basketball Coach Neff offered $1. 00 to the person who came up with the winning name. Since the largest industry in Ladoga was a canning company they became known as the Ladoga Canners.
