Painted Mongolian Kang Low Cabinet - Late 19thC Cotton with softened edges and characterfulThis antique painted low 'Kang' cabinet is from Mongolia and dates to the late 19th century. They were used beside the kang which was a raised platform used as a bed or lounging area. Kangs were quite often made from stone which was heated from underneath in the winter. The two painted male children are a motif commonly found in China & Mongolia often referred to as the '100 boys' motif. They were auspicious symbols to bring agricultural prosperity.
