and has been heavily repainted some time in the second half of the £20th century

creating a refined decorative composition that contrasts beautifully against the lacquer surface

from the expressive face and arched neck to the painted saddle and harness motifs highlighted in muted reds

Lacquer Turban Box From Rajasthan - 19thC Z Comes mounted on a blackA more unusual find, lacquer turban boxes have become rare in India and are excellent collector's pieces. This box is from Rajasthan and has lovely old patinated brass handles and lock with a key. It is over 120 years old and dates from the late 19th century. Lacquering is done by the craftsman on a hand powered lathe. The wooden pot is spun and a lac stick is pressed against the pot. As the pot spins friction softens the lac which coats the surface
